In the early 1980s, China made floriculture as an industry. After 20 years' development, it has made remarkable progress and gradually formed the prototype of modem and commercialized floriculture industry with a certain scale.With China's rapid economic development and steadily improved living condition, floriculture has become indispensable consumer goods in social communication, ceremonies, rituals and daily life; it is flower consumption that promotes the continuous development of floriculture industry. However, because of China's overall lower level of flower consumption, improving after a period of growth stage of development, China's floriculture industry has entered on a small profit margins phase with seasonal excess products.The overall level of the floriculture industry and flower consumption of Wuhan City, which is the largest city in central China is not very high, so examining ways to promote flower consumption of residents has reality significance to drive the development of floriculture industry, and ultimately form major floriculture production and flower consumption areas which is centered of Wuhan.Firstly, This paper defines the supply regions for flower consumption of Wuhan City as Hubei province and the nationwide (except Hubei), after a rough understanding of its development, it makes a detailed analysis on the development of floriculture industry in these two major regions in terms of floriculture plant space, output, exports, product structure and dependency, location of production and other business entities, which forms of the supply base of flower consumption of Wuhan residents.Secondly, after grasping the international, Chinese and Hubei's flower consumption level, it makes a brief introduction of Wuhan City which is the socio-economic background of residents flower consumption; it analyzes the level and characteristics of flower consumption in Wuhan in variety structure of flower consumption, product sources and modes of transportation, the market system, consumption and expenditure, consumption patterns and characteristics by qualitative and quantitative methods. And it compares the flower consumption of Wuhan with that of other typical cities in these aspects to analyze the differences and causes.Thirdly, the random survey on the flower consumption of Wuhan Residents is conducted by program design and questionnaire and the flower vendors are interviewed; it makes an in-depth variation analysis based on gender, age, education, income and employment characteristics and it reaches the four overall features in the main flower consumers, the cause of consumption, the product structure and the choice of location and time preferenceFourthly,, it concludes that the overall level of flower consumption of Wuhan City is low, and the four causes of corresponding consuming characteristics are: the economic factors, that is the standard of living; connotation factors, that is consumer preferences; large-scale factors, that is population structure; supply factors that is flower prices.Finally, according to the study above, it puts forwards the policies and proposals to promote the flower consumption of Wuhan residents from the perspective of demand and supply. Firstly, the two proposals for flower consumption are accelerating the pace of economic development of Wuhan, improving the living standards of residents and four alternative strategies to guide flower consumption of residents, to exploit flower consumption market. Secondly, the four policies for flower supply are to make scientific development planning for floriculture industry; to perfect flower market system and establish a modern flower logistics system and information systems for flower production and marketing; to enhance flower production, personnel training and gradually establish the technology and scientific research system for floriculture production; to positively publicize floriculture knowledge by floriculture enterprises and the market and innovate the forms of flower consumption.
