Since the historic shift from Maoism to the policy of reform and open in 1978, China's industry structure has changed dramatically. Meanwhile, the service industry begins to play a much more important role in China's economy. The service industry plays a key role in providing employment opportunities, transforming industrial structure, improving citizens'living standards and promoting economic growth etc. However, the service industry develops with a comparative slow pace as a result of various factors. Meanwhile, the ratio of service industry to entire GDP is remarkably low. The theme of this thesis is to offer policy reference for the government by analyzing Chinese service industry development status quo, discussing the reason why China's service industry develops slowly and providing the policy of how to develop China's service industry more quickly. The thesis is organized as follows.Chapter one is the strategic significance and status quo of the service industry development. Firstly, the author wants to articulate the background of China's service industry and enucleate the strategic significance of service industry development. Secondly, an analysis of the China's status of service industry development will be given out. In addition, the author will point out some problems of China's service industry development by the comparison with international experience of service industry development.Chapter two is an analysis of the reason why China's service industry develops slowly. The author believes that the slow development of China's service industry is due to the lack of favorable environment. Other reasons can be attributed to insufficient investment from government, undeveloped market in monopolistic industry and the opening policy of service industry which is unfitted to national economy developing.Chapter three is some policies and measures recommended to improve China's service industry development. Firstly, the government ought to provide a better environment. Secondly, the government should try to increase the investment to public service industry. Thirdly, we should strive to promote the market-orientation in the monopolistic industry. Finally, we must improve the degree of openness of service industry.
