After several decades of dredge and extension, Beijing-Hangzhou Canal has developed to a comprehensive shipping system which contains shipping, port handling, ships manufacturing and modern logistics. The mileage opens to traffic has been up to 1100 kilometers, and the transport capability is trinal of the Jinghu railway. Now, it's an important transport line between north and south of coal shipping.Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Shandong segment plays an important part in the society and economy development of Shandong province, especially in the south-west area. As to the development of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Shandong segment, we should have a comprehensive and sustainable foresight. When it's on the right way of development, it's beneficial to the living quality and environment. Whereas, will not only result in the huge waste of funds, but also result in the natural resources inappropriate, and brings huge breakage to the cultural value of the canal. Nowadays people pay more and more attention to the sustainable development. Along with the adjustment of economy structure and the sustainable development strategy putting into effect, Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Shandong segment should develop by the sustainable way.The main purpose of this paper is to set up an exercisable index system about the sustainable development of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Shandong segment, and then evaluate the level of sustainable development by comprehensive assessment method.The result shows that it's on a low level of sustainable development between 1997 and 2003, and on a middle level of sustainable development from 2004. It has an accelerated growth trend although the whole level of sustainable development is low. The research result of this paper might be a reference to constitute the development planning of Beijing-Hangzhou Canal Shandong segment.
