Geological work, as featured by its pioneering and basic function in promoting social development in various fields, has played an increasingly greater role in the rapid development of socio-economic development in times of resources depleting and environment deterioration. The demand for resources will continue to maintain a growing momentum in a long period of time in the course of China's industrialization and urbanization. As a result, it seems rather urgent to enhance basic geological study, reduce risks and boost investment in mining industry as well. The restructuring of geological organizations throughout China has led to the separation of non-for-profit geological work and commercial geological work in the context of the practices of Reform and Opening-up Policy over the past three decades, in particular for the last ten years. On the one hand, most of provincial geological teams have been localized, and the management systems for both central and local geological teams have been in good shape. On the other hand, geological work, as has just experienced a round of ups and downs since the end of last century, is now facing new challenges in the current global economic meltdown. To rise up to the new challenges brought about in new circumstances, it remains a big issue to figure out whether the previously-hold thoughts, ideas, policies or management system will meet the new requirements. To that end, the Ministry of Land and Resources of China has launched a campaign since the beginning of last year, called"Discussion on reform and advancement of mineral exploration". The main objective is to review and summarize achievements and defects of the non-for-profit geological investigation programs so as to upgrade management mechanisms and systems and remove barriers that constrain further mineral exploration. It is of significant importance to reconsider on the orientation of China's non-for-profit geological work. The non-for-profit geological work follows its own natural rules. It requires us to draw common elements reflecting the development of geological work based on comparison study on different working mechanism and operation mode and under different political and social circumstances of China and Canada, so as to provide guidance and inspiration for the orientation of China's non-for-profit geological work. This present paper tries to deliver some thoughts on the orientation of China's non-for-profit geological work based on the comparison study on the management system, operating system and public good service to the society. This paper comes up with five proposals in the conclusion as follows: 1. Enhancing unified planning of geological work by improving coordination mechanism; 2. Optimizing the mode of geological mapping programs by starting with pilot projects in particular areas; 3. Improving assessment system and achieving integration of multi-sources results; 4. Expanding new areas for further cooperation and building good strategic partnership with relevant organizations; 5. Raising the awareness of public service and improving public-good service of geo-data to the society.
