Abstract/Summary:
Urbanization is the common law in the experiences of economic and societal development across countries. It is also a phenomenon that arises in pace of industrialization. However, the urbanization experiences across countries can differ from each other. By the end of 2008, the urbanization rate in China was over 45% and the non-agricutural population has passed over 600 million. In the eastern, middle, southern and westwern part of Gansu Province, there are many populous poverty regions. Urbanization progress in these areas falls behind those in the eastern part of China. After the 16th NCCPC, some scholars raised that the policy priority of urbanization in China should be aimed at promoting the coordinated development between the large-medium cities and small towns. Meanwhile, it is suggesed that the urbanization process should be deeper in the eastern regions while there should be wider urbanization in the western counterparts. It is thus meanwhile to explore whether further urban development can help the poor regions out of the poverty trap and promote sustainable local development.By doing the empirical studies about factors like indusrial development, fixed asset investment and labor mobility, this paper tries to explore the reasons and mechanisms that may influence urban development in the poverty regions of Gansu Province. A few other questions are raised finally for further research.
