The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is expected to help Annex 1 countries in achieving their reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions, as they committed to, under the Kyoto Protocol. This mechanism should be both cost-effective and contribute to sustainable development in non-annex countries. Besides from contributing to global emission reduction, achieving technology transfer through the CDM has been China's main goal. This thesis aims to investigate to what extend the Wind Power, Cement Waste Heat Recovery (CWHR) and Coal Mine Methane (CMM) CDM projects registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has brought with it technology transfer, as well as studying what factors that are relevant to CDM and technology transfer in China. Through examining previous literature on the subject as well as collecting relevant data from CDM projects project design documents (PDD) this thesis finds what factors that effects CDM and technology transfer in China. In these sectors the CER revenue in regards to technology transfer was found to be of lesser importance than other factors. Factors of more importance were rising concerns regarding additionality, regulatory differences in the UNFCCC CDM executive board (EB) and that of Chinese Designated National Authority (DNA), as well as Chinese Renewable Energy and CDM policies. The technology transfer achieved through the CDM was also found to be of a lesser nature than desired by the Chinese government, however regulatory policies has helped alleviate this in some cases. In conclusion this thesis discusses the relevant factors CDM development and technology transfer, and possible measures that can be taken in light of these factors.
