Starting from the basic concepts and methods of container transport, standardization and economic analysis, this paper first summarized the relevant research at home and abroad, and then focused on accurate summarization of the standardization organization, the three landmark events in the process of standardization and the current standard system. Moreover, economic theories such as transaction cost theory, labor division theory and government intervention theory were introduced to analyze the standardization of the Container Multi-modal Transport, which revealed the economic essence of standardization. Finally, through the analysis of the standardized mechanism, this paper found the best path to form standardization. The main points of this paper were as follows:first, when summing up the standardization of Container Multi-modal Transport, this paper divided the standardization organization into three different levels, especially emphasizing on the three landmark events in the standardization process, and summarizing the standardization system according to different levels of organization. Second, when conducting market analysis, this paper used supply and demand analysis, and found the relationship between standardization and different market players. Third, when analyzing the economic essence of standardization, this paper used Adam Smith's labor division theory and the cost analysis of the transport industry, and divided the coordination costs brought about by division into average cost, transaction cost, time costs and experience costs. Through analyzing the economic function of standardization, this paper found that standardization could reduce the coordination costs brought about by labor division from the following aspects:(1) reducing transaction costs in transportation, (2) reducing information asymmetry and market failures, (3) changing the nature of transport products and achieve network economy, (4) improve the compatibility of transport systems, thus stimulating the realization of the proposition "labor division stimulate productivity". Finally, through comparing the formation of domestic and international container standards, this paper analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of different path in which standardization was formed; and through using the game theory to analyze the formation mechanism of the standard, this paper found that "institutional standard" is more applicable than the "market standard" in transport industry. In a word, this paper summarized the content of the standardization of the Container Multi-modal Transport, thus theoretically enhancing the comprehension for the standardization of the Container Multi-modal Transport, and practically pointing out the weakness of the standardization of the Container Multi-modal Transport in travel industry. Moreover, the conclusion of this paper gave some feasible suggestion on how to use standardization to realize transportation development and economic growth.
