Land use issues related to a series of major problems such as effective development and utilization and reasonable security of the country and regional resources, the protection and management of the ecological environment, farmland protection and food safety, socio-economic sustainable development, and is crucial to our country development in the 21st century. Landscape ecology is the most abundant elements, the fastest-growing, and the most broad affecting of the subjects in modern ecology. Landscape ecology emphasizes the interactions spatial pattern, ecological processes and scale. The use of landscape indices in landscape pattern analysis has become a major research methods of landscape ecology. At present,the use of remote sensing images is the commonly used method, the use of Arc GIS,the geographic information system software, combining to Fragstats software pattern, can quantitative calculation describe the structure of the landscape indices.In this paper, use the theory of landscape ecology, and with the help of platform"3S"technology, landscape patterns and land-use study issue of the main urban area of Chongqing city are studied, the purpose is to explore the law of evolution by studying the status quo and then discuss the pattern optimization, in order to guide the study area landscape ecological construction. The main conclusions are:(1) On land use change, during the 19 years of from 1988 to 2007, arable land and woodland-year rate of change is faster, year rate of change of construction land is the fastest, shrub and water-year rate of change relative center. Cultivated land is the source turns to other landscape types, transformation land mainly change to construction land and green land, forest area has experienced the process from the reduced to increase, shrub area is of continued growth, in which one of the important driving force is the farmland for forest policy implementation in the country; construction land increase fast, that because the economy needs inextricably linked to the development after the Chongqing Central municipality was established in 1997.(2) On the comprehensive land-use changes, as the influence of the topographical features of the study area, the overall pattern of spatial variation of the main urban area of Chongqing city is decided. During the period from 1988 to 2007, land use integrated degree is in growing trend, in 1988, the integrated degree index of the land use is 279.383; in 2001, a land use integrated degree index increased rapidly, to 282.012; and in 2007, land use integrated degree index increase to 282.133. Among them, the maximum contribution integrated index is of arable land into construction land.(3) On landscape pattern change and its driving factors, in the study area, landscape density increases, the shape tends to the complexity, the level of diversity increases, the driving factors of landscape changes are mainly topographical conditions, linking of the transport networks of the range-gorge region, the impact of the government policy, and people's strengthening environmental awareness.(4) On the optimization of landscape pattern, first and foremost is to protect the existing arable land and water, followed by is the strengthening construction of forests, to the final, the construction land development and use must be strictly controlled and rational planning.
