Gas chromatography interfaced with mass spectrometer(GC/MS) is a important tool in the analysis of complex mixture such as the volatile oil in Chinese Tradition Medicine(CTM). It is obvious that there are still some uncertainty when only a single method was used to carry the qualitative of chemical compound in complex mixture. So the result of qualitative analysis by a single method is not believable exactly. Now gas chromatograpy combined different spectroscopys have been employed to study volatile oil and further works have been done by many analysers. This dissertation presents Gas chromatography/qudrapole mass spectrometry(GC/qMS), gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (GC/FTIR) and gas chromatography/orthogonal acceleration time-of-flight mass spectrometry GC/oaTOFMS were applied to analyse the volatile oil from the stem and fruit of Acanthopanax senticosus (Rupr. Et Maxim.) Harms. Base on the spectra search function of GC/qMS, with the aid of the advantage that the geometrical isomer can be discriminated by GC/FTIR and the ability that the accurate charge mass ratio (m/z) can be determined by GC/oaTOFMS. Compared with the results obtained by GC/qMS, these results are more credible. The A, B parameters in the gas chromatography formula play an important role in the qualitative analysis. 24 Compound in the volatile identified from the volatile oil were selected as aim compound. They were divided into several group and the correlation in the group and between the different groups were studied, The result shows that A, B parameter is a potential method in the qualitative analysis The confirmation and identification of the impurities in metolachlor(a herbicide) by using gas chromatography-orthogonal acceleration time of flight mass spectrometry (GC/oaTOFMS) and gas chromatography/quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC/qMS) are described. For the accurate mass measurement can be carried by GC/oaTOFMS, the elemental compositions of molecular and fragment ions in the spectra are suggested. In the experiment the average of mass deviations between the measured and theoretical values was below 2.5 mDa. Finally ten impurities were confirmed and identified. They accounted for 94% of the total impurities by weight.
