With the development of computer technologies and discrete event systems simulation theories, the system simulation technology is increasingly applied to container terminal system study. But because of container terminal system involves numerous entity, events and activities, and the simulation environment is complex and dynamic, the traditional stand-alone simulation modeling method has some disadvantages, such as long cycle of modeling, running slowly, difficult to extended, etc. Also, considering the entities'geographical distribution and modular scheduling, this paper adopts the latest technology of distributed simulation——High Level Architecture (HLA) to establish container terminal distributed simulation platform. And focus on the study and development of the yard federation.The HLA-based distributed simulation platform is called a federate, which has four federations: the management information system (MIS), QC model, Yard model and Gate model. These four federal members run on different computers at the same time, and interact with each other through the LAN and HLA/RTI environment, and simulate four kinds of assignments such as unship, shipment, extract container and collect container collaboratively.This paper focuses on the following aspects: 1) the study of single Flexsim-based yard model, including operation module design, interface module design, and statistics module design; 2) the study of extension methods of yard federation, and verifies the reusability and easy extensibility of HLA-based distributed simulation platform.;3) validate the interoperability of the platform with four concrete operations.The study process verifies the feasibility of applying HLA method to complex system's simulation research. Meanwhile, it provides a test platform for further strategy research on container terminal.
