The Grand Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou is the world's oldest and longest artificial canal as well as one of the outstanding water projects in China's history, and it has born a profound influence on the regional landscape and urban growth in the long process of historical development. Both The canal heritage and ecological environment has played an important role in the regional and urban development, which should never be neglected, no matter from the perspective of historical heritage or contemporary development .At the present stage, the protection planning of the Grand Canal has often been carried out on an ill-prepared theoretical basis and the theoretical research has lagged far behind practical research ,which to a certain degree, has impaired the practical efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative for us to sum up experience on the basis of theory, explore the principles and grasp the trend correctly, thereby forming a systematical and normative theoretical pattern and framework which can be used to guide the wider practice in the near future.This project aims to enhance the cognition and discover the problems through analyzing and studying current related research situation at home and abroad, probe into the innovation of idea of legacy preservation, serving to play an effective and enlightening role in protecting and planning the cultural heritage.The paper analyzes the research background first, select a fundamental theory, and then summarize it theoretically and practically on that basis. Define the concept of spatial and temporal scales canal and main features of the cultural heritage of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Protection Planning and related attention point analysis of the difficulties faced by heritage protection and heritage conservation planning in the assessment of the role of induction of specific measures for protection of cultural heritage and canal laws and regulations mechanism to further explore the suitability of the canal heritage protection and planning strategies and methods. It analyzes the projection planning of The Grand Canal cultural heritage, so as to catch the future development trends, and after specifying the constitute of the canal legacy, it assess the Canal's heritage value scientifically and extract the Canal's characteristic, besides, it targets the protecting object, delimits the protecting zone, regulate the protecting plan and conducts the research towards classified specific Plans. Through primary analysis, the main focus of this study-the related research of the heritage protection planning of The Grand Canal is put forward by using theoretical method.
