Virtual Reality (VR) is a new technology, which constructs a virtual scene with all kinds of advanced computer software and hardware technologies to realize natural environment simulation and to supply a real-time vivid experience. It is a 3-dimensional human-machine interaction interface. Based on mufti-sensors and user's own feelings, he/she can go into the virtual world watching and manipulating the objects, and can be also involved in the virtual events with human natural abilities. VR can be applied in many fields such as tourism, architecture, city planning, aviation & aerospace, design & manufacture, medical care &treatment, education, training, entertainment, etc. However, VR is scarcely applied in shipping industry.Against the very background, this thesis establishes a virtual system of marine engine room in accordance with the real engine room environment, develops the visual simulation system with the VR characteristic and realizes real-time simulation and interaction The research work includes several chapters as fallows:In the first chapter, a brief introduction to the characteristics, system construction and critical technology is presented. On the base of immersion level the virtual reality system is divided. Also, the definition of roaming system is summarized and the study situation of virtual reality in domestic and abroad, as well as the purpose of this thesis, is introduced.In the second chapter, the structure of virtual system of roaming engine room on board was established. The construction of system software and hardware environment and 3D graphic API are discussed. At last, a virtual reality platform is presented.In the third chapter, the Multigen Creator and Vega are introduced. As for Vega, the construction of Vega, OpenGL Performer, which is the base of Vega, and the basic theory of 3D graphic drawing are firstly discussed. The hierarchical structure of Vega class and basic Vega classes are put emphasis on. Special effective modules of Vega for engine room on board are lastly proposed. As for Multigen Creator, the modeling technology of Creator is firstly discussed. The construction of virtual system of roaming engine room on board in Creator, the structure of OpenFlight file format and OpenFlight API are mainly presented.In the fourth chapter, key technologies of virtual system of roaming engine room on board are introduced. Geometry-based modeling and rendering, image-based modeling and rendering, geometry and image-based modeling and rendering are discussed. Optimizing technologies in scene such as Visibility Culling, Level Of Detail, World Subdivision, Instance, are presented. In the end, collision detection methods such as space decomposition and hierarchical bounding volumes are introduced and a new method based on collision line segment is put forward.
