With the rapid development of computer science, communication technology and other technologies, the visibility of information becomes the new field of application development and the simulation technology based on Virtual Reality (for short , VR)is being increasingly the focus of currently research..Generally, the traditional Marine Engine Room Simulator only simulates electric power station switchboard, main engine control and monitoring console, and main engine. So it is difference from real engine room. By using of virtual reality technology, we can build the 3D Model of Marine Engine Room. And students can roam and do some operations through monitors and operation equipments. It is finer for trainers to know real engine room. So, building the Marine Engine Room Virtual Reality Simulator is a beneficial supplement of present Marine Engine Room Simulator, and also improves the training quality.This paper presents the process of how to analyze the status of the development and application of VR technology, models the virtual engine room system according to the real engine room condition, builds the 3D model, and develops the visual simulation system which has the VR characteristic. The research work includes several parts as fellow:1. The significance of this task is presented by studying the status of the development and application of VR technology all over the world. The design and method of how to develop the virtual engine room system is also presented in this paper.2. A software named Multigen Creator is used to model the scene of engine room. In the process of modeling, the methods of External Reference, Instance, Texture are used. After set up the scene database, the models are well optimized by the method of LOD.3. Real-time roaming is fulfilled by using a VR development software named Vega and the design process of scene roaming is offered. The paper introduces the way to build two walkthrough modes that are controllable walkthrough and automatic walkthrough.4. Communication between Visual Simulation System and Full Mission Marine Engine Room Simulator are established. The paper presents the way to drive the objects such as meters, handles, indicator lights and buttons in the virtual scene.
