"San Fan Qi Xiang" is the most unique ancient residential area in Fuzhou. In the ever-changing urban developing, "San Fan Qi Xiang" have to face the double dilemma of the protection and development. With such frustration the unique forms of the residential buildings and the spirit of residential area are gradually dying out. So how to inherit and develop this unique residential forms and spirit in high buildings, which are the general popular now, is a very important proposition in today's urban developing.Adopting architectural typology, phenomenology of architecture, ecology architecture theory, and other modern architectural theory. This paper analyses the forms, the space structures and the communication ways of its inhabitants in"San Fan Qi Xiang" area. Attempts to explore the typical features, site image and the ecological spirit of "San Fan Qi Xiang". At the same time, The method of preserving the forms of residential buildings and heritage the spirit of the residential area are studied here and put into practical use, by analyzing the forms, the atmosphere of residential area and ecology concept of successful grouped houses domestic and international. Finally, the writer combines his own research results with the successful experiences of others in exploring the methods to design the high residential buildings in Fuzhou.This paper is divided into four sections: Chapter 1 Exordium, which introduce the background knowledge of "San Fan Qi Xiang", the purpose and significance of the study and the research methods presented here; Chapter II analysis the typical features, site image, ecological spirit of "San Fan Qi Xiang"; Chapter III analysis the successful practice of residential building at home and abroad, which preserve the forms of ancient residential buildings and heritage the spirit of the residential area; Chapter IV the design methods will be put forward by preserving and transmitting the residential forms and spirit of "San Fan Qi Xiang" in high residential buildings in Fuzhou.
