Communication is the key to Distribution Automation. The traditional distribution networks generally include the fiber-optic communication, carrier, microwave, radio and so on. However, anyone can not satisfy the system requirements alone. Looking for a better communication scheme to make communication system no longer be the bottleneck for the development of distribution automation, has always been the focus of research in Energy Automation.After years of development, GPRS technology has been widely applied in Distribution Automation because GPRS signal not only has a large coverage, but also its network has high quality. Based on the analysis of GPRS-related technologies, especially on the research of the practicality, reliability, security and economy, the paper indicates that it is entirely feasible to use GPRS communications technology for the transmission of various types of data in the construction of distribution automation.In this paper, the network scheme is illustrated in detail to use GPRS technology in distribution automation system for the access of distribution terminal equipment. On the base of practical application, a variety of communications program was compared between GPRS server and distribution terminal. It is concluded that the TCP protocol is a better selection in Transport Layer, DDP protocol is needed in Middle Layer, and Balance IEC101 is the best choice of all Telecontrol Protocol. The network scheme introduced in this article is easy, safe, real time and low-cost, it can be applied to both the new distribution automation systems and the existing system.GPRS servers are the nucleus of this scheme. The article analyzes the development demands of GPRS server, and provides the hardware and software architecture. GPRS Server program about communication modules and protocol modules, etc. were analyzed, at the same time, the flow diagram and code were supplied.GPRS access network scheme in this paper corresponds with the actual situation in power distribution network and achieves the design goal. The scheme has been applied in some distribution automation system, the practice proves that the system is fully functional and well meets the consumers' demand.
