Distribution automation system is a management system which integrates modern electronic technology, communication technology, computer technology and network technology. Distribution automation system mainly deals with data acquisition and monitoring and fault section diagnosis, isolation and supply restoration. In the construction of distribution automation system, communication protocol and mode is a very important part, which is the foundation of high speed, real-time and reliability of data and order transmission.With the development of mobile communication technology and market, mobile data communication is becoming a new direction of development of data communication. With the advantage of high speed transmission, great data volume and technique maturity, GPRS can completely satisfy the demands for reliability and real-time of data communication of distribution automation system.First of all, general hierarchical design of the system is introduced in this thesis. Besides, software and hardware architecture and specific processing method are explained in details. A communication method is also proposed that control center uses static IP address to access Internet network which can connect with GPRS network. Based on this communication method, specific communication protocol is formulated. Secondly, design and implementation of communication software is illustrated in this thesis. The functions of order transmission, data acquisition and data processing have been implemented by communication software via socket and multiple thread technique. In light of characteristics of line's structure of the distribution network and commonly used method of fault diagnosis, a kind of fault diagnosis method which is suitable for this system has been proposed. Tree and its traversal methods in data structure are used in fault diagnosis algorithm which can locate fault section quickly and accurately in certain condition. Finally, a summary has been made for all the research works in this thesis. The research works in the further study has been analyzed.
