With the development of economy in our country, increasing of automobile, traffic congestion has become the serious social problem. The researchers and engineers in the field of the traffic engineering are focusing on how to regulate and control the traffic flow properly and scientifically. The arterial adaptive coordinated control is an important branch of urban traffic control, it is an important problem in intelligent traffic control that using advanced Information Technology, Communication Technology and Control Technology to design advanced traffic signal control system and to improve the efficiency of arterial control according to the character of arterial traffic flow. Study and design of branch of urban traffic control system, which solve traffic congestion, are very important for economic development.In this dissertation, the basic conception of traffic control system and relative technologies are introduced firstly, and then the arterial control system is analyzed and studied using intelligent control theory. The optimization algorithm of arterial adaptive coordinated control is studied deeply according to the vehicle delay model. The real-time optimization algorithm of arterial adaptive coordinated control is studied deeply according to the vehicle delay model. And optimal period is calculated using Webster Equation to determine critical cross-road, adapt to coordinated control. When optimize parameter rate of green signal, main branch is high-weight considered. When optimize parameter difference of phase, two methods'is applied, one is based on minimization of vehicle delay according to reference [9], the other is based on the signal state of up and down directions and flow-quality difference to adjust the parameter difference. Above all, development and design are completely made to the system by the author.In this thesis, the improved algorithm that used to optimize the main parameters such as cycle, split and offset of arterial control system is presented. And simulation based on TSIS5.1 is provided. Finally the design of central computer software which used to control arterial traffic signal real-time is introduced. We can predict that traffic congestion will be decreased extremely, and make agreat profit for economy and society.
