On C-e Translation Of Diplomatic Speech

In the information age, the diplomatic speech is playing a more and more important role in establishing good state image, elucidating internal and external policies, winning support from international community and disseminating unique culture and the translation is instrumental to this process.Against the backdrop of insufficient research of translation in this field, this thesis is aimed to make preliminary exploration in its nature and practice so as to facilitate its development.From the perspective of Stylistics, diplomatic speech is a combination of written and oral language with more written features. Diplomatic speech is formal as well as understandable, precise, terse and with the sense of propriety in lexicon; syntactically, long sentences are used more than short ones and different sentence patterns function cooperatively; the textual structure is basically in line with the international standard with emphasis on logic development; rhetoric devices are moderately used to assist the expression and effect.The theory of Norms put forward by Gideon Toury provides a beneficial perspective. By means of extratextual sources we find that C-E translation of diplomatic speeches is a balanced practice between "adequacy" and "acceptability" with an inclination to "adequacy". In preliminary norms, the translation is made directly from the original text of the diplomatic speech. In operational norms, the original textual structure remains the same in translation text in the aspect of matricial norms. As to the aspect of textual norms, the thesis analyzes the principles and practices of the translation through case study by means of actual texts in Chapter 4.In general, literal translation is the main method with free translation as the auxiliary means.In lexicon, the translation is also featured in formalness and understandability, preciseness and propriety and standard rendering of political neologisms; dividing, combining, supplementing subjects and changing sentence patterns are used with some methods to attain coherence and cohesion; rhetorically, the language form is retained to the maximum but the semantic rendering is the utmost principle.
