The Interpreting Principles And Tactics Of Diplomatic Humor Utterance

As a way of interpersonal communication, humor can make people feel happy; it is conducive to the realization of the purpose of communication. In the diplomatic situation, more and more politicians like to use humorous words to show personal charm, activate diplomatic atmosphere and convey certain political ideas. To the diplomatic interpreters, how to felicitously interpret humor utterances is a difficulty in front of them. By searching and reading relevant literatures, the author finds there is few researches on diplomatic humor interpreting for the importance to diplomatic affairs, it is necessary to make a research on diplomatic humor interpreting. Under the theoretical direction of functional equivalence and combining with diplomatic humor of our country, the author presents the principles and tactics of diplomatic humor interpreting. There are five parts in this paper. In the first part, on the basis of research background, the author summarizes the theoretical significance and value of my research; by searching and reading relevant literatures, he summarizes their translation theories and viewpoints, and puts forward some opinions of his own. The second part is mainly about comparative analysis between general humor utterance and diplomatic humor utterance, thus summarizes two features of diplomatic humor utterance, the diplomatic pleasure and political relevance. In the third part, he takes "All the reactionaries are the paper-tiger" for example, and combines with features of diplomatic humor utterance, which shows the interpreting of diplomatic humor utterance should follow the political equivalence principle and pleasure transfer principle. The political equivalence principle requires target language and source language should realize dynamic equivalence both in political implication and content form; the pleasure transfer principle requires interpreters to choose proper interpreting tactics, and transfer the pleasure from source language to target language, thus make the receiver understand the humor. After that, the author put forward the interpreting tactics of "literal translation (priority), free translation (auxiliary), flexible addition and omission". In the fourth part, by combining with large numbers of political humor materials, and using the translation principles and tactics, the author analyzes the translation process. From my analysis, found that interpreters should be flexible to choose the principles and tactics, for different diplomatic environment, cultural backgrounds, language expressing. The last part contains summary and some policy suggestions.
