The year 2001 saw the issuance of National Curriculum Standard of Music for Full-time Nine-year Compulsory Education (Trial Edition) by the Ministry of Education, marking the beginning of the relevant reforms in primary and secondary schools across our country. Undeniably, the basic conceptions of the new standard have exerted great influence on music education in primary schools. In addition to the favorable aspects, some problems arise. Especially, the weakening, even neglect of some basic knowledge and skills, including the recognition of music scores and training of auditory skills, has drawn the attention of music teachers and scholars.Originally, constructivism is in the field of psychology. Its relevant learning and cognitive theories have certain positive impacts on education over the last two decades. This thesis, based on the investigation of teaching of music knowledge and acquisition of music skills in primary schools in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, summarizes the problems and the weaknesses, and attempts to provide the corresponding suggestions by employing the learning and teaching theories in constructivism, with the hope to enhance the teaching modes and strategies in this field and further improve the students'music proficiency. To illustrate the point, documentation, questionnaire, statistics and observation are used in the thesis.
