Patent generates from the process of protecting invention and promoting technology innovation, which has evolved a standard and rules in international competition. Someone who controls the patent can control the international market and international trade. Product containing intellectual property factors will enhance its value, which can bring huge trade profits to export country. Therefore, the economic study about the influence of patent output on the export trade has important practical significance. Therefore this paper makes a more comprehensive analysis of this problem in order to mine the role of patent. This paper first analyses the mechanism of the influence of patent output on the export trade in the perspective of intellectual property right and technical innovation respectively by reviewing the theory and research status at home and abroad. On this basis, three levels of empirical study are carried out. The first level is to verify the relation between patent output and export trade based on the perspective of international point, the panel data is selected from OECD member countries; the second level is to test the influence of patent output on the export trade as a whole, using the 1995-2008 time-series data; the third level is to analysis the influence of patent output from different industry on the export trade, through compiling the panel data from seven industrial sectors from 1990 to 2005, such as medicine, building materials, chemicals, nonferrous metals, machine, light industry, textile industry. The inspection results shows:(1)There exists a long-term stable relationship between patent output and export trade, to some extent, patent output contributed to the development of export trade; (2) Domestic patent grants and foreign patent grants both have no significant influence on our export trade, but patent grants abroad have positive impact; (3) In these seven industries, there exists a positive impact between patent output and export trade, the degree of influence of medicine and machine industry first, and textile industry the last. Finally according to the results of empirical study, this paper also puts forward relevant policy suggestions from three levels and proposes future research directions, in order to offer some workable ideas with a view to implement China's patent strategy.
