| Nansha Port Section of Guangzhou Port is located on the estuary of the Pearl River, the hinterland of which covers the most developed cities in Pearl River Delta. Due to its preferable location, development of Nansha Port Section has been focused on and container transportation is highlighted inside the district. After years of construction of Nansha port Section (Longxue Island Port Section), the construction projects of container terminal of phase I and II have been completed at the island, which include 10 large-scale container berths for oceangoing transportation and 5 barge berths for inner waterway transportation.Owing to the completion and lauching-into-operation of the Nansha Port Section, the volume of container throughput of Guangzhou Port has frequently reached new records. The volume of the whole port in 2009 was 11.31 million TEU, which ranked the 3rd among the domestic ports and the 6th worldwide. Despite of this large volume of throughput, the container handling capacity of the port can not satisfy the increasing demand of transportation yet. In order to release the high pressure of the existing container terminals, construction of new container berths is strongly suggested.Depite that significant progress has been achieved in recent year, still some issues related with operation exist in the existing terminals, among which the extreme insufficiency of barge berths was on the top, which has become the main obstacle in the growth of the port. This situation is especially serious in the phase II project of Nansha Port Section, in which even no barge berth was constructed and because of this, barges have to call at the large berths. In order to solve the problem and ensure a long-term and sustainable development of container transportation in Nansha Port Section, the port authority and the government have decided to commence construction of the phase III project of Nansha Port Section as the extension of the existing terminals of the phase I and II projects. The phase III project will be located in the middle of the quay line of the southern part of the Longxue Island operation section. Construction of barge berths for the phase II project is also considered in the project, which will contribute a lot to the optimization of the terminal transportation combinatione, the completion of the collection and distribution system and enhancement of the competitive ability of the port. The project of phase III is still in the phase of prophase study. It is necessary to solve the problem of match between berths for seagoing container vessels and for the barges in the phase III project of Nansha Port Section. Based on the prophase research work of the project, the present study will be concentrated on the consistency analysis between the capacity of the quay line of the existing container berths as well as the scheme development of river-sea integrated transportation. Based on the study, a new layout scheme for the arrangement of the oceangoing container carrier and the barge berths will be put forward, which provides guidance to the scheme revision of the master plan of Nansha Port Section and reference for the development of Nansha Port Section project. |
