The historical and cultural significance of Grand Canal can be comparable to the Great Wall's. In history, the Great Wall played a military defense role mainly, but with the passage of time, its military function no longer exists. The former function of the Grand Canal and its original rivers is military transportation, however it soon turned into transportation. Today, its transportation function is still working, cultural symbolism is growing and the appeal for protection of heritage is rising. We should make full use of its cultural symbolism and explore its tourism resource which helps for developing economy and building a harmonious society.Yangzhou Ancient Canal was in the most important geographical position of the Grand Canal system, and it also centralizes tourism resources. Some experts appeal for protection, and write concerning theses. Though most of them inspect it, fewer in depth. There are more sponsors and macroeconomic planners, fewer specific designers. They are most experts who have good insights, but a number of their articles are just about concepts, not even the definition of river. For example, some treat Yangzhou Ancient Canal as one section of Jing-Hang Grand Canal. These years, the city government and the related experts carry on the development plan of Yangzhou Ancient Canal, but they only build-in. We should make convenience for industry communication through building up industry-chain which can perfect tourism production. At the same time, I make the summary of theories for better use of our heritage, which right support the continued development of water-back city.
