Focusing on Agricultural Bank of China (ABC) which has conducted share reform as the last state-owned commercial bank in this country applying the tool for strategic execution, this thesis studies how the performance appraisal method is improved by taking ABC NJ Branch as the sample, combining my years' banking experience and employing the theories mastered in the period of my MBA pursuit.First of all, this thesis expounds the purpose and significance of the subject, systemizes the involved theoretical documents, makes a summary and comparison over the history of Chinese and foreign commercial banks in performance appraisal, which constitutes good reference for the research herein. Secondly, the current situation of the sample is assessed in this thesis, which, on this basis, lists the problems existing in performance appraisal and requiring improvement at the said bank as well as introduces some ideas to improve the performance appraisal methods by means of Balanced Score Card. In order to make the selected method serve the purpose better, this thesis analyzes the different mission characteristics of the bank at different periods of development and compares some advanced tools for performance management on their characteristics, so that this thesis is more significant in reality. According to the theory of Balanced Score Card, this thesis designs a Balanced Score Card specific to this bank and takes its branches and sub-branches in the system of Balanced Score Card as the emphasis of the research. Commencing from the corporate perspective plan, this thesis makes systematic study on this bank including its strategic target analysis, key success factors screening, key performance index design and weight assignment to key performance indices, etc. and finally deduces an overall Balanced Score Card comprehensively applied on the sub-branch level. Meanwhile, this thesis makes preliminary demonstration on the effect of Balanced Score Card by means of the author's occupational advantages and provides the information how the strategic target of this bank is enhanced after implementing Balanced Score Card. Therefore, this thesis concludes that Balanced Score Card can improve its performance appraisal and suggests that it should be promoted in ABC. Finally, this thesis assesses some issues requiring considerations in the course of implementing Balanced Score Card, the deficiency of this thesis and the orientation of the subsequent studies.
