"Four Lengths of Flowers" in Nan Song Dynasty and"Eight Flowers Painting Volume" by Qian Xuan are traditional Chinese colored meticulous paintings of "flower sprays" manuscript, but the former reflects the exquisiteness and elegance of court paintings in late Song Dynasty, the latter is the typical representative of succeeding Nan Song court painting style, simultaneously, reflecting literati paintings style in Yuan Dynasty. By comparing the two paintings we can see the historical trends of the change of the paintings'style at the turn of the Ming and Qing, that is, from rich and gaudy to delicate and pretty splendid, from decorative beauty of the court painting to the natural beauty of the literati paintings."Eight Flowers"is a significant witness of the transition from the Nan Song Court style, to aesthetics of literati, and also the significant witness of Qian Xuan changing from "Modern Style" to"Literati Painting". Qian Xuan insisted on the idea of "retro", traced back to the tradition of "paint from life", and widely used the literati paintings style form which is the combination of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seals for the creation of flower-and-bird painting. Qian Xuan led the trend of the times with Zhao Mengfu and others.
