Under the influence of the May Fourth Movement, the magazine named "The New Society" (November 1st,1919—May 1st,1920) was first published in Beijing by the sponsorship of Beijing Social Industry Progressive Association in November, 1919. The main editors are Qu Qiubai, Zheng Zhenduo, Geng Jizhi, Xu Dishan, Qu Shiying. The magazine is the vital material in the study of May Fourth Movement and New Culture Movement.After experiencing May Fourth Movement, the young intellectuals like Qu Qiubai and Zheng Zhenduo in their twenties, began to break through the only pursue of own spiritual quest, attended the patriotic struggle against imperialism. They gathered together in "The New Society", studied the western theories and introduced the advanced part to the public. The young intellectuals experienced social darkness to rethink the condition of China in the perspective of western sociological theories. They criticized the poverty and poor of Chinese individual, family and whole country, also criticized the inaction and vulnerability of traditional intellectuals and intelligentsia. They advocated to seeking the wisdom of Europe and America experience, arousing national awakening to grasp the best time for innovation.The young intellectuals in "The New Society" claimed the idea of founding a democratic new society. They raised a banner of "Social Reconstruction", exhorted students to do "Social Service", encouraged women to liberate their selves and also encouraged the public to fight till the end. They called to popularize mass education, to build a new society in a peaceful and progressive way. They emphasized the importance of labor problem in China, and wanted to chance the old labor system in Chinese society.The young intellectuals in "The New Society" dashed their thoughts down passionately with the kind of mind of "I am the young man". However, the reactionary political force, the conservative sponsor and the people with indifference forced them to be the "lonely light lifter". They could not go further in the lonely road of culture enlightenment. Finally, the young intellectuals had to give up the culture staging area of "The New Society""Humanity". They turned to the literature field where their heart landed with the wish of "Culture save the nation". From learning from west world, the young intellectuals in "The New Society" took their first step on the road to save the people and the country. They rethought China and reviewed their selves, but "failed in paper" at last. Temporary failure did not erase the hope. Their pursuit for a new life still went go.
