The development of intercultural communication is relatively late in China and the space of its theory is expected to be built completely further. This thesis mainly shows the relationship, which is also an important issue of linguistics and intercultural communication, between language and culture from the perspective of intercultural communication. We cannot do the research on intercultural communication without considerting language. Therefore, how to explain and reveal the relationship between vocabulary, which is the entity of language, and culture becomes the key points in the thesis.The thesis sums up the relationship using the comparative analysis to the same word"hand"in Chinese and English from word formation, semantics, culture, rhetorical devices and so on. At the same time, the factors that affect intercultural communication are not just the language level, as well as cultural, political, historical, psychological, environmental, and the different nationality's outlook on life, values and many other. For this reason, this thesis adopts the theories of linguistics, cognitive linguistics, pragmatics and intercultural communication to build the theme.The thesis is totally divided into five parts. Chapter one mainly focuses on the research of current status, significance, background and methods. Chapter two talks about the relationship between language and culture from the perspective of intercultural communication. What's more, it defines the culture. Chapter three is an important point of the thesis, exposing the word formation of"hand"in Chinese and English and its different mindsets of Chinese communicators and English. Meanwhile, it also reveals the semantic components of the word"hand"in Chinese and English and its cultural connotation. Moreover, it explains different cognitive pattern of two nationalities has the influence on the intercultural communication and further compares the same and differences of the rhetorical devices such us metonymy and metaphor in Chinese vocabulary and English. Chapter four mainly points out the factors which influence the communication because of the different cognitive pattern and mindsets in the relationship of language and culture. Chapter five is also the last part of the thesis. Through the comparison of the word "hand" in Chinese and English, the thesis sums up the influence of vocabulary to the culture and intercultural communication and further reflects the similarity and specialty of language plays an active role in intercultural communication.
