Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein 的Ⅱ, two giants in the history of Broadway musicals, maintainedthe most fruitful and successful consisten partnership ln the field of American musical theatre Togetherwith other contemporary great composers and lyricists, they created our vast library of American fine artsTheir music ls very interesting and endearing It has always had a specail resonance and meaning beyondits context and function. The lyrics are very clever. tender and touching. Obviously, Their theatre concepts,pattems almost lead the way in the American musicals' history So they have an important position in theAmerican cultures.This thesis has seven chapters. The first chapter overviews R-H's life and career experiences by tracing thehistory Chaper 2 introduces "R and H factory" and its Outputs Among them was not only put down everyProduct's creation background, composition process, casts, performing and awards, but also somecomments on every product's achievements. The third and the foruth chapters focus on the creations ofHammerstein's theatre plays and lyrics. Chapter 3 is about the creation of plays. It talks about thedifferences in Plot patterns,role arrangements, literary sources and structure arrangements from otherpeople A summary is given of its special music and theatre thoughs Chapter 4 gets to know lyrics fromthe views of literature nature and theatre nature of music.In Chapfor 5 and 6, a trying to uncover thecomposition style of Richards' songs is taken Chaper 5 tries to find out the general rules ofEuro-American musical creating from the musical morphology field by studying the melody, musical form,harmony, tune and tonality Chapter 6 explores three theabe functions of songs in the play in chapter 7,there presents R-H's contribution and Position in the American musicals' historyThis thesis expands its contents from line to points and goes down deep to each level It is based on theanalysis of instances without any injusticeThe mtroduction translation and theory studying of the musicals are only the recent affairs after theopening to the outside world. And I have go to know this charming field for a not too long time, eitherTher are still a lot of unknown fields for us to study and to develop. I hope this thesis could contribute alittle to those fields.
