In this thesis, the phonetic system of the dialect in Kai County, ChongQing city is described and, from the diachronic and synchronic as- pects, compared with the mid-ancient phonetic system. and the phonetic system of present Beijing dialect, with a view to revealing the Kai County dialect's phonetic state and its evolution laws. The Kai County dialect is the mixture of the immigrant's dialect and the local dialect. Its phonetic properties are: ts , are not distinguished. The hong yin in "精" group and the "知"group have mined into ts, ts', s , z . The "泥"and "来"ini- tial consonants are not distinguished. "晓""匣"and "非"initial consonants are easy to be mined in Hekouhu . Erhua finals are far simpler than in Beijing dialect. The ancient entering tone has incorporated into the rising tone, but with many exceptional words. Great are the phenomena of vari- ant pronunciation between classical Chinese and vernacular, especially be- tween the old words and the newly-formed words. Though these van- ant pronunciations haven't changed the phonetic system of the Kai County dialect at present, they obviously shows its development tenden-cy.
