China is a united nation that is made up of many nationalities including Tibet. At the beginning of 20th century there was still no such a word as "independence" in Tibetan language .It was not until modern times that the "Tibet Issue" appeared. Both British and Russian imperialists hatched the plot of "Independence of Tibet" and "suzerainty of Tibet", attempting to deny China's sovereignty over Tibet, which in theory became testimony of "self-determination of Tibet" and "autonomy of Tibet" later. After the Second World War the United Stated inherited the so-called "suzerainty of Tibet" theory and held forth self-determination for Tibet under the background of cold war. It also encouraged the Dalai Lama to exile to India and supported the separatists' actions. In recent years the exiled Dalai Lama began clamoring for national self-determination and high autonomy of Tibet, the desire often being realized through plebiscites. Based on the works of the former scholars' and the findings of declassified documents of the U.S. government and directed by the historical materialism related, this dissertation tries to explore and analyze the origin and development of "Tibet Issue" and to criticize their falsenesses in theory and facts. The dissertation is composed of preface, text, conclusion and appendix. There includes three parts in the text:Part I narrates the origin of "China's suzerainty over Tibet" and points out its effects on "Tibet Issue".Part II explores the origin of "Tibet self-determination" and criticizes its falseness in theory and facts.Part III introduces the origin of "autonomy of Tibet" and analyzes its falseness. The conclusion part explores the cause of development of "Tibet Issue" and discloses its essence.
