| Foreign language teaching materials (FLTM) play a vital role in reforming foreign language teaching (FLT). In recent years, the evaluation of teaching materials is no longer limited to evaluating the material content itself; the focus has shifted to how the teaching materials are being used. The use of the new edition of College English Coursebooks, which serves as the embodiment of the reform of College English Teaching for the 21st century, has been a great concern in universities nationwide. However, the studies of the Coursebooks focused mainly on the introduction of the editing theory and the content. Positivistic studies of the problems, which the teachers and students are faced with when using the new edition, are not sufficient. Therefore, I have made a preliminary investigation on the Integrated Course in the three of universities in Changchun city. This paper includes mainly the following four parts:Part I The editing and the characteristics of the new edition of College English Coursebooks.Part II The history of FLTM: a literature review. It includes: the development of the FLT syllabus, the changing social needs, and changing methods in teaching foreign languages.Part III The positivistic study. Based upon the literature review, questionnaires were given out as the investigation form to 320 students of the three of universities in Changchun city, to find out the present situation and the problems of the Integrated Course in use. The results were presented and analyzed.Part IV Reflections and proposals. The responses on the questionnaires indicate that some teachers and students do not fully understand the principlesand the teaching methodology of the Integrated Course, and that the Coursebooks require improvement as well. Based on my investigation, I have put forward some proposals concerning how to use the Integrated Coursebook. |
