The Naxi Geba script has been used by the Naxi minority group living in the southwest of China-including the town of Lijiang, South Hill, Judian Village and Ludian Village, about 3/5 of the whole Lijiang County. It is used exclusively by the Dongba (shamans/priests) as an aid to the recitation of ritual texts during religious ceremonies. Some ritual texts are written by only Geba script, some are written by Dongba script mixed with Geba script. The latter part of ritual texts has less influence, so they have not been researched deeply by the linguists. There are a lot of issues hanging in doubt, and these issues are interdependent. The thesis is looking for a systemic approach to research the script from the aspect of symbol-construction.The Geba script is a put-together script, consists of derived symbols and independently invented symbols, Most of the symbols have components from other languages, more or less. That is the reason that we divide the script into derived symbols and independently invented symbols to research. The former part are mainly about the origin of Geba script, and which languages they are derived from, how to be derived. The latter part are about how a Geba symbol is constructed from derived characters.The thesis is divided into:Charter I, introduction. This part introduces the general situation of Geba script, summarizes the researches of other linguists, and then brings forward the researching aim and purpose.Charter II, the origin of the Geba script. This charter does the detailed, considerable textual researching and analysis on the 688 geba symblos(including variant characters) embodied in The dictionary of Naxi pictograph written by Fang guoyu , He zhiwu, gathers the points of the originof Geba script.Charter III, research on the origin of Geba script. The Geba symbols are classified into groups by the original source they derived from-group of symbols derived from Chinese, symbols derived from Tibetan, character derived from Dongba script, symbols independently invented.Charter IV, research on the symbol-construction. Firstly, we analyze how Geba symbols were derived from other language or independently invented. Secondly, we look for some rules and principles of how to construct Geba sysbols theoretically. Thirdly, we try to resolve the problem of variant Geba symbols and properties of Geba script from the discovery of symbol-construction.The thesis analyzes completely the origin Geba script, and the symbol-construction for the first time. We have finished some unprecedented work by using some methods, and then draw some conclusions:1 complete textual research on the origin of Geba script, summarize, develop and modify the points of other linguists.2 try to research on the derived symbols and symbol-construction of Geba script for the first time.3 try to analyze the symbol-construction of Geba script on the basis of zisu principle.4 discover that one Geba symbol derived from more than one foreign characters. The derived symbol can derive some new Geba symbols, composite symbols made by paronym or non-paronym.5 discover the rules that how to select original characters and components to derive Geba symbols6 research on the property of the Geba symbols on the basis of symbol-construction: Geba script is The Geba script is a put-together script,consists of derived symbols and independently invented symbols.
