In modern Chinese when a directional verb appears after a verb, the position of "le" can be changeable, forming two sentence structures "verb+directional complement+le" and "verb+le+directional complement". Scholars specializing in grammar studies have been paying special attention to the different functions of "verb +le+directional complement " and "verb+directional complement+le" and the practical usage of the structures. People had made contribution to the research in the past and have achieved results that can be studiable and used for future reference. But international students studying in China are still finding the study and the usage of the two structures difficult, especially in distinguishing differences in the structures, we often confuse that the structures can be interchangeable. When native Chinese speakers are asked to distinguish between the structures, even though they would know the difference they often cannot explain why. But in reality, "verb+directional complement+le" and "verb+le+directional complement " cannot be interchangeable and even if it could it would change the meaning of the sentence. There are delicate difference in the structures and even native Chinese speakers cannot tell the difference. This essay will analyze the elements that are causing the different usage of the structures and analyzed the usage of" verb+le+directional complement" according to the data compiled by studies in the past.Using large quantity of corpus analysis, the thesis highlighted features reflected in the actual usage of the structures:1) The structure "verb+le+directional verb" is more often used in written form than in oral form while "verb+directional verb+le" is more flexible in its usage. 2) "Verb+le+directional verb" tends to appear in the middle of a sentence while "verb+directional verb+le" appears more often at the end.3) The structure "verb+le+directional verb" is subject to more grammatical restrictions while "verb+directional verb+le" isn’t.Such features were inspected in this essay by analyzing statistics through corporal analysis. Finally, the thesis differentiated the different meaning in the two structures, concluding that "verb+le+directional verb" stresses more on the process of an action whereas "verb+directional verb+le" emphasizes on the result. The thesis also resorted to sequential and general scanning in explaining the differences in meaning.
