During the North and South Dynasty, the Buddhism developed very quickly, but the circumstantiality of the development is quite different between the North Dynasty and the South Dynasty, the South Dynasty put its emphasis on the Principles of Buddhism, especially on the translating of the sutras of the Buddhism, and the North Dynasty focused on the meditation, especially on the sculpture of the figures of Buddha. This essay researches on the figures of Buddha, which is recognized by the product years, and the Grottoes of the Buddha. By the ways of comparing the figures of Buddha with other standard figures in the Chinese history, and analyzing the distribution of the Grottoes of Buddha in Shaanxi province, the author conclude the characteristics of the sculptures of the Buddha in Shaanxi province, and discusses the headstream of the art of the Buddhism of Shaanxi area, especially divided the whole North Dynasty into five periods according to the characteristics of the each period.
