Based on the fieldwork conducted in a Thai Chinese village located in northern Thailand mountain area, the thesis studies the application of three languages including Yunnan dialect, Mandarin and Thai by aspects of language attitude, language acquisition and language proficiency. The investigated Thai Chinese are divided into the old, the middle-aged and the young groups. Research findings demonstrate that as the interviewees vary from old to young, the competence in Thai keeps improving while the capability of Mandarin drops gradually, but the difference in the application of Yunnan dialect is insignificant. It is inferred that the Chinese language will not disappear, and the current Chinese-Thai bilingual communication may last for a long period. |
