| Confucius'Poetics is one of the most noticeable bamboo slips of Chu stored in Shanghai Museum, which is published recently one after another. It amounts to 29 whole or fragmentary slips, including 1006 words. Its content concerns the commentaries of The Book of Songs. Owing to regarding the author of bamboo slips as Confucius according to the combined word—Confucius, the arranger name it Confucius'Poetics. As an original of Confucian disciples on The Book of Songs since pre-Qin period, Poetics is of great value, because it was written early during the warring states and especially concerned interpretations of The Book of Songs. The discovery of Poetics has provided the most direct and most realistic historical materials for us to expound the original version and meaning of The Book of Songs, and the fact of poetics, which is important for the study of the history of Chinese literature, Confucian classic, and thought, culture. The research of Poetics has been an old dispute in the academic circles since it was published in November of 2001. So far much common knowledge in some basic sections such as the arrangement of bamboo slips, the definition of characters and the interpretation of words etc. has been approached. The special analysis and the systematic overall research, which aim at ideological intensions, features of language and style, are making progresses in winder and deeper fields. However, being a basic judgment of reality, the problem about the author and writing times has been difficult to tell what is right so far. A correct judgment of the problem not only directly concerns the position of Poetics in the Confucian study of The Book of Songs and the source of the study of The Book of Songs in the Han Dynasty, but also is very helpful to the arrived times that is reappraising the value and meaning of Six Classic and early Confucian classic. On the basis of existing research in academic circles, this paper makes an attempt to go further into the issue about the author and the writing times of Poetics in three aspects, which can be separated into three independent relative parts. The first part successively expounds ideological intensions on the doctrine of natural disposition and innate quality, ceremony and music, destiny and rulers'authority, which was explained by Confucius, Poetics and the bamboo slips of Guo-dian. At the same time it is assisted with related standpoints of Mengzi. By showing the great differences between Confucius and Poetics, we can remove the possibility that Confucius is the author of Poetics. If we compare Poetics with the bamboo slips of Guo-dian, we will see the coincidences between them, which can testify both of them originates from the same female parent and provide the guess on the author and writing times of Poetics. Its comparison with Mengzi brings a clearer cognition to this article's argument. In the second part, firstly this article analyze the language character of Poetics such as concrete glossary, sentence construction and related explanation etc. in detail with the references of unearthed ancient Chinese books (the bamboo slips of Guo-dian, Ma-huang-dui's silk scripts) and the handed over ones (The Doctrine of the Mean, Yi Zhuan ) Then by the comparison to The Doctrine of the Mean , Mozi , the article discuss the literary style of Poetics. From these efforts, the author and writing times of Poetics appear more accurate. The third part proves one by one that "ZiXia Version", "ZiGao Version"and "ZiShang Version"are all untrustworthy by providing many strong reverse evidences. Then the article compares the similarities and differences between Poetics and The Prologue to Mao Poetry. At last it deduces that Poetics was written by a Confucian successor of third generation, whose name we don't know. It appears that Poetics should be finished in few decades before 350 B.C., which belong to the period of latter "earlier warring period". I do my best to try to follow the principles bellow during the course of writing. Firstly, the arrangement and research of Poetics should include two aspects. One is the judgment of reality and the other is the one of value. The former mainly concerns the work of philology, which is the confirmation of the bamboo slips. And the latter includes the extensive theory's research and interpretation such as the study of poetry and historical culture etc. The former undoubtedly is the base of the latter. At present with the circumstances in which some basic issues related to the judgment of reality have not been settled in academic circles, I begin to form my paper by adopting a main versionand giving concern to other ones. The two aspects, the judgment of reality and value, are always present in the chapters of this paper, which could not be parted with entangling together. Secondly, I try to compare the unearthed ancient Chinese books (the bamboo slips of Guo-dian, Ma-huang-dui's silk scripts etc.) and the handed over pre-Qin documents (The Analects of Confucius, The Doctrine of the Mean, Liji, Mengzi etc.) with Poetics from the ideological intensions to features of language and style, using "the way of dual evidences". Thus we can show their similarities and differences, and thereby revive the great background of Poetics age Lastly I try to give a detailed explanation to the features of Poetics, which acts as a post between Confucius and Mengzi, with paying much attention to the historical view during the writing. Only by putting Poetics on the background of the history of the study of The Book of Songs, Confucian classics, thought and culture, can we reveal its role as forming the transition process from the doctrines of Confucian literature in pre-Qin to the ones of Confucian classic-oriented literature in the Han Dynasty. I have spent about one year in writing this paper intermittently. The paper doesn't show its appearance today until it has been revised for several times. |
