The Shuowen jiezi ,written by Xu Shen in A.D.100 circa ,has been long recognized as the earliest Chinese etymological dictionary. Outstanding of all among the Qing scholars were Duan Yu-cai,Gui Fu,Zhu Jun-sheng and Wang Yun,earning themselves also the honor as the "Four Great Shuowen Masters". However most scholars who research into Shuowen pay more attention to Shuowen jiezizhu and less attention to Wang Yun's Shuowen shili. Actuallv,we make a thorough and fair assessment of it,thus we can make sure of its status in the history of Chinese philology. This is the reason why the author chooses this topic.Wang Yun' chief work Shuowen shili tried to explain how Wang Yun phrase the Shuowen ,it is also the emphasis of this dissertation. To "Liushu",Wang Yun had his own opinion. His theory of jianshu had thirteen categories. Jianshu corroborate that the graphic form composition of character is complicated. There is some methods of graphic form that traditional "Liushu" can't comprise .The Jianshu research is one of the biggest problom that influence the successive researchers. The WangNing' research of Chinese Graphic Form has important value. To Chongwen ,Wang Yun also had his own opinion. He created the concept of the Tongbu Chongwen ,YibuChongwen, Fenbiewen, Leizengzi. These influence the theory of Contemporary Chinese Evolvement deeply. The other content of Shuowen shili is the amendment of Duanzhu' mistake. It involves the amendment of Duan'altering seal mistake ,deleting seal mistake, explaination mistake, invoking mistake and his "Bushiwuqing". The research method of Wangyun is that he analysed the graphic form, the sounds and the meanings according to the document material, Muyanfa, he also researched the graphic forms by ancient writing such as Jinwen.We examine Wang' devotions and losses in his works. To the theory of Chinese ,it has great contribution such as the relation between Chinese andLanguage, the theory of "Liushu" and the rule of how Chinese evolve. In the other hand, it also has its shortcomings such as it classify the "Liushu" much minutely, some explaination in ordinance and the classification of Fenbiewen and Leizengzi. Shuowen shili has a great influence on the successive researchers. After WangYun, the work of phrase Shuowen became one aspect of Shuowen research . As a Chinese book, a Xungu book, a literature book, Shuowen shili has its value, so we affirm its status and significance in the history of Chinese.
