Faure Gabriel is a renowned French composer and instrument player. His masterpieces are seldom known to Chinese expect his requiems and artistic songs. However, Faure is a household name in France. He was given such a high position in the nation that some people who lack understanding of him cannot comprehend.In fact, Faure is a transition person in French music history. He created a lot of works which covered all the genres in music. He wrote three operas, which are "Pomethee" (1900), "Penelope" (1907-1912) and "Masques et Bergamasques" (1919) and a small number of orchestral music. His energy was devoted to piano, chamber music and vocality. "Requiem" is one of the most famous work Faure created, in which some anti-traditional methods were used.Piano composition is one of the main fields Faure worked on. Among his large amounts of creation, the most famous one include 13 nocturnes, 13 barcarolle, 6 impromptus, 9 preludes and 4 waltzes. Besides these, Faure greatly use piano in other kinds of music, such as chamber music and songs. All these show that Faure was fond of tamber and piano itself.His piano works enjoy beautiful melodies and harmony. They tend to be halftones and simple in motive and development. It helped Faure to become one of the most influential composers in France in late 19th century and early 20th century.Faure's piano works spanned all his life and reflected different characteristics in different periods. This thesis aims at analyzing his way of composing, his features and the reasons behind it through his works.
