Dario Fo, an Italian dramatist, actor and director, Nobel Literature Award winner of 1997, is one of controversy. His works have become a uniqueness in comedy stage with their acuity, audacity and non-yieldingness. Having offended almost all dignitaries, he got the call of"the Mass'Bard", by the same token. To date, Dario Fo has produced over 50 works, including folly, one-act burlesque, black comedy and beckett. His famous works have now been translated into over ten languages, and played throughout the world. At present only two of his selected works, We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! and The Accidental Death of an Anarchist, have been published in China. Though the number of his works translated into Chinese is limited, the strong critical spirit and civil posture have had a positive effect in China's avant-garde theatre. The thesis will undertake a deep approach to study and discuss his comedy style, characteristics and contribution to contemporary European comedy at large, based on the existing eight pieces of his work translated into Chinese.Introduction: To briefly introduce Dario Fo's growth experience, authoring environment, work profile and significance of this study.Chapter I: The carnivality of Dario Fo's comedy. The clown plays the leading roll, who challenges pundit and strikes hierarchy in the reckless game and revelry with non-difference public involvement, and breaks through psychological ties to obtain freedom and transcend reality.Chapter II: The reality tragedy of Dario Fo's comedy. Dario Fo integrates traditional European comedy with reality theme and modern art means, in this way enhancing the exploration into traditional Italian folk comedy while reflecting the contemporary drama aesthetic feature of his works, thus surmounting strictness of literature. In the final analysis,Dario Fo's plays are organic combination of literatural creation and oral creation, and complex of traditional folk culture and modern urban culture. His success represents that of the entity of folk culture and art.
