The theory of linguistic adaptation by Verschueren presents a new pragmatic perspective for pragmatic research. This paper begins with an introduction to the theory of adaptation and uses the new theory to explain redundancy. Redundancy, in communication, refers to the extra information, but with no new information. Redundancy is a common phenomenon in language. It is one of the controversial topics in the field of linguistics. However, redundancy is a linguistic strategy used by communicators to realize adaptation and communicative goals. Redundancy, as a linguistic choice, is the result of adaptation to context, too. Proper redundancy can play many positive roles in communicating. Communicators choose redundancy as a language in order to adapt to different contexts, according to various demands.
