There is a study of the Tai language loanwords in the Wa language. The focal point is on the study of the initial laws of correspondence between the Tai language and the Tai loanwords of the Wa language. Based on a multitude of linguistic materials from the Mon-Khmer languages in China and the Kam-Tai languages, and the historical background information of the Wa and Tai people, the writer first sorts out a number of Tai loanwords of the Wa language in Ai Shuai,then analyzes the initial laws of correspondence and explores into the chronological strata of these Tai loanwords, with the aids of reconstruction phonological system of the Pro-Kam-Tai languages.This thesis contains five parts:ChapterⅠintroducts the previous studies in this field, including the aim, principl, approach, flaws and distinguishing features of this research as well.ChapterⅡgives a general survey of Tai loanwords. The materials of the Wa language in Ai Shuai are taken as examples to describe the main structural features. This chapter also discusses the semantic categories and the pattern of the loanwords and historical relationship between the Tai and the Wa people. ChapterⅢmakes a general introduction of the phonological system of the Wa language in Ai Shuai andthe Tai language in Dehong,.ChapterⅣis the key part of this thesis, in which the writer discusses the initials of the Tai loanwords in the Wa language. The first gives the developing relationship between the old initials of the Pro-Kam-Tai languages and the modern initials of the Tai language in Dehong.Then,according to the sound laws of correspondence,the writer tries to divid the Tai loanwords into two strata,and identify the historically developing characteristies of initials of the Tai language in Dehong.The last part is the summary that concludes the main finding characteristies and flaws for future research.
