Vocabulary is the most open, dynamic and flexible part of a language, and thus it is regarded as the barometer of the times. Vocabulary change bears all marks of every age. Over the past two decades, as great changes have taken place in Russia's social, political and economic conditions and cultural life, consequently, language, as the tool of communication, has been changing constantly. New words and expressions have been coined one after another, which pervade our daily life. Moreover, radio, television, internet and other media lead to a wide spread of new words and expressions. Under such circumstances, new words and expressions will certainly be brought into the limelight and become an important research subject. However, the existence of new words and expressions is not an isolated phenomenon. Their emergence and development is so inextricably linked to the social culture that they are regarded as the polygon prism reflecting contemporary society. This paper focuses on the new words and expressions emerging in Russian language since the mid-1980s, studying their origins and semantic characteristics and analyzing many factors influencing their emergence in the context of social background with which they closely correlate. Through the observational method which combines diachronic and synchronic approach and static and dynamic approach, this paper attempts to analyze the origins of the new words and expressions and reveal the evolution as well as the law of semantic development of them. The innovation of this paper lies in two aspects. First, it studies the new words and expressions from a new perspective. Second, it conducts the research in a more diversified, in-depth and comprehensive way. Instead of limiting the research to static description of the origins of the new words and expressions in Russian language, this paper, based on the theories of semantics and context, focuses on the semantic characteristics, semantic change of the new words and expressions as well as their relations to semantic field and social context. This paper consists of three parts:Part One: Introduction. This part begins with the necessity and theoretical basis of the study, and then it points out the content, significance, methods, purpose as well as the task of the study.Part Two: Main body. (Four chapters)Chapter One: General overview of new words and expressions in Russian language. This chapter introduces the definition, researching situation and composition of new words and expressions in Russian language.Chapter Two: Origins of new words and expressions in Russian language. This part is the summary of the paper, pointing out the situation, results, significance and practical value of the study.
