| Ernest Hemingway is a great writer who enjoys popularity all over the world. Many scholars from home and abroad study his works in many aspects, but few study his writings from the view of reception aesthetics. This paper aims at how to enjoy the war novels of Hemingway from the view point of reception aesthetics and how to know the social functions of these novels including recognizant, aesthetic and educational functions. We can understand that Hemingway expresses his thoughts which include the disgust of war, prosecution for their atrocities of the fascists and sympathy for the victims in his war novels. This paper is also intended to build his values about caring for human beings'future and the love and eagerness for peace. This paper studies five Hemingway's representative war novels which are A Farewell to Arms, the Sun Also Rises, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Islands in the Stream and Across the River and into the Trees and several short stories to show these novels'social functions from the view point of the theory of reception aesthetics... |
