Objective: By understanding AIDS related discrimination among college students, health works, civil servants and probing the influencing factors, this paper provides theoretical evidence for prevention strategy and develops AIDS health education intervention methods, which could reduce the discrimination and curb the negative effects of the AIDS.Methods: Three different groups of population were selected to have questionnaire surveys in Shanxi Province, which includes 1313 college students, 305 health works, 211 civil servants. The reliability and validity of each questionnaire is good.Their recovery rate was 100%, and the effective rate was above 98%. Anonymous self-administrated questionnaires were used to collect the information about AIDS knowledge and discrimination attitude. Questionnaire included AIDS related knowledge, discrimination and its factors. Results: (1) College students: The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 75.8%.The awareness rate of three mainly kinds of HIV transmission route (blood, mother and infant, sexual intercourse) were high, there was a misunderstanding in the knowledge of non-transmission route and the prevention. About 50% students didn't know the World AIDS Day and the policy of China. Medical college students, male students and urban students have a good knowledge about AIDS. The three highest score questions in discrimination were "Will you buy goods/food produced by infected persons? , " Will you have a meal with the infected persons?" , "Will you go to visit the infected persons?" . A large percent of students agree that HIV/AIDS patients have rights to work and to live as normal , but only half students were willing to go to visit the infections and have a meal with them. There wasn't statistically difference on the discrimination attitude among three schools'students. The result of cumulative logistic regression analysis show that, the important factors accounting for college students'attitude toward HIV/AIDS in proper order are: psychological professional , rural students , the concern with AIDS epidemic situation and the scores of policy, general, non-transmission route knowledge .(2) Health workers: The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 81.8%.There was low awareness in that "Is it possible to be infected through biting by insects, sharing closestool or baths? The three highest score questions in crimination were "Will you buy goods/food produced by HIV infected people? , Will you take different ways to treat patients by their different infected routes? ", and "Did AIDS should be isolated with healthy crowd? The result of cumulative logistic regression analysis show that, the important factors accounting for health workers'attitude toward HIV/AIDS in proper order are: the concern with AIDS epidemic situation, the experience of treatment (care) AIDS, and the scores of transmission route, non-transmission route, general knowledge.(3) Civil servants: The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 84.9%. Civil servants could not tell the difference between HIV-positive and AIDS patient. Besides, they have a misundersanding in some behavior and knowledge such as: "to use the same toothbrush, razor", "insect bite", "courtesy kiss" and mother-to-child transmission related knowledge. The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge in Health department civil servants was higher than other department. The three highest score questions in crimination were "Will you buy goods/food produced by HIV infected people? , Will you allow your children to play with the HIV-positive's children? ", Will you pay attention to the HIV-positive persons, and keep distance with them? The result of cumulative logistic regression analysis show that, the important factors accounting for civil servants'attitude toward HIV/AIDS in proper order are: the concern with AIDS epidemic situation, and the scores of non-transmission route, general knowledge. Conclusion: College students, health workers, civil servants had a general understanding to AIDS related knowledge and should be further enhanced. The scores of general knowledge,non-transmission route and the concern with AIDS epidemic situation, were the common factors accounting for three groups of population's attitude toward HIV/AIDS. Departments should strengthen the health education, and actively explore strategy to change attitude and behaviors, mobilizing the whole society to participate in prevention against AIDS and create an open, tolerant environment for HIV/AIDS.
