At present, with the development of liberation, globalization and localization of the whole world economy, international competition has become more and more strenuous. Many companies have recognized one fact: technology and innovation must be managed, and its core competence has to be strengthened. But the question is, how?Today, many multi-national companies, especially those technology-based companies, have understood the importance of core competence. They have changed their company strategies to focus on the core competence, and expect to keep their companies developing continuously and steadily on the basis of core competence.However, the companies in China are very different from those in the western countries. Until now, there are lots of difficulties in these companies, especially in those small high-tech companies, such as: shortage of capital, weak competitiveness in market, drawback in technology and so on.Now, the companies in China have to face the following questions: how to build up the competitive advantage in opening economy and get continuous development and fasten business reform. So, these companies, especially in those small high-tech companies have to take cognizance of the importance of core competence.The author selected one small high-tech company in Chengdu and inquired into it. In this thesis, the author applies theoretical basis about cultivating core competence in the second part. In the third part, on the basis of investigation on this case company, the author analyses the company from the view of company strategy, and puts forward the strategic framework of core competence and the ways to establish and cultivate the core competence. In the last part, based on the case study, the author tries to put forward his own thoughts in the difficulties and some other hindrance of small high-tech enterprises to establish and cultivate core competence, such as: political environment, management pattern and so on. In one word, in this article, the author hopes to discuss how to build up competitive advantages through cultivating the core competence of small high-tech companies and hopes to deal with some practical questions based on the practical case study.At last, the author advances the important role of small business in the market economy in China, and, it is the practical significance of this thesis.
