The space-time disequilibrium of regional economic development is a universal phenomenon. People's close attention to and studies of it have given birth to regional economics. At the present stage and for a long period of time in the future, unbalanced regional development does and will still exist in China and within each province of it. So, it is of significance to implement strategy in the coordinated regional development. Due to the uneven development, different developing models come into being, which mainly include Gradient Expansion, Growth Point, Point- axis Development and Network Development models, etc. Of the developing models, Gradient Expansion generally applies to the wide-range regional development, such as that of the whole China, Whereas Growth Point, Point-axis Development, Network Development, owing to their great theoretical significance and their actual value, are suited for provincial economy, a subsystem of the national economic system. This paper takes the unbalanced regional economic development of Sichuan province as its study object. First, with the prefectures (Prefectural cities and autonomous prefectures) as the basic region units, it makes a quantitative analysis of the differences in present regional economies, classifies the prefectures into four types of different economic levels and performs a space-time and dynamic comparison in the differences of regional economic development. Then it analyzes the differences of the cities within the province and goes on to probe into the shaping mechanism of the unbalanced regional economic development in Sichuan from five major respects. After that, it proposes a new division of the province into economic areas, which clearly shows the developing conditions and features of each area and points out proper counter measures of regional development. At last, From the angle of West China's Development, it expounds the significance of coordinated regional development, and probes the aim, space developmental models andsignificant measures of the strategy in coordinated regional development in Sichuan province. This paper consists of eight chapters. Chapter one briefly states the theories of the equilibrium and disequilibrium in regional development and the key models of it, Growth Point, Point-axis Development, Network Development, etc. Then it explains in concise words the study trends of the unbalanced development of regional economy in Sichuan province as well as the significance, train of thought and methods used in the study. Chapter two gives a brief account of not only natural resources and environment but also the course and main characteristics of economic growth in Sichuan province. Chapter Three, first, Taking the prefectures as the basic region units, makes the analysis with the help of economic total norms and relative norms in both 1999 and 1978. Then, it makes flit! use of the method of aggregative value measurement to classify prefectures into four types at different economic levels. Finally, it compares the GDP of the major economic indexes in 1999 with that of 1978 so as to reveal the dynamic characteristics of unbalanced regional development of economy since theimplementation of reforming and opening-up. Chapter Four with cities as its objects of study, aims to research into the urbanization level, rank system and distribution of the cities and towns over the area. In this way, it coworks with the preceding chapter to fully exhibit the regional differences. Chapter Five probes into the influences and functions of...
