Geopolitical factors have been playing prominent role in the fOrmation ofRussian diplomatic strategy after the end of the Cold War. The pmpose of theariic1e is to analyze the geopolitica1 chaxacteristics of the diplomatic po1icy and toinspect its inevitability and effects in order to obtain some beneficialen1ightenment.The power of a nation has a close bearing on the geopolitical factors, such as geograPhica1 position. territorial Iand. cIimates. resources. populationetc. GeopoliticaI theory is frequently a-n important foundation when a state formsits diplomatic strategy. Geopolitics, Which experienced thxee developmentalperiods and formed six sects, has exercised a great influence over the worldhistory and human civilization, There is a specia1 relation between Russia andgeopolitics because a lot of geopo1itical theories refer to the country.Due to the disintegration of the USSR and the col1aPse of the bipolaxa1iaternationaI stfucfore in l99l,Russia has enduxed not only the complexgeopolitical international background, but also the biggest geopolitical changeafter Moscow dukedom was set up, And the nation has been confronted with fourwith four sides of intimidation which are from the west, the souti, the fOrmera1lies and the inter of the nation itself, While Russia still possesses geopoliticaladvaniage because of its specia1 geograPhical position abundant resources and sofOrth. So the state fOrms geopolitical strategy which mainly is realistic andnation~powerfu1. The strategy's content mainly is "Depending on the east, stabilizing the south and safeguarding the west." The state says that the core ofthe strategy is to defend the country's border against aggression and toconsolidate the state's position as a great power Which is one of the formingmu1tipoles in the world. Than-ks to these situations, Russian government forms anidea1 dip1omatic pat--tern called as "three rings" by means of Tota1 Diplomacy, which is based on "dealing with concrete matters" wtth the aim of equilibriumThe geopolitica1 trait has given prominence to Russian diplomacy3There are severa1 historic and cultural reasons for the prominentgeopolitica1 trait in Russian diplomacy. Special geopo1itical environmentespecia1ly geopolitica1 position is the crucial element that causes Russianpermanently puzz1ed by the geopolitical proposition: "Does Russia belong towhether Europe or Asia, belong to whether East or West?" Different answers tothe proposition gave birth to three major political thoughts: Westernize, Radica1Nationalism and Euro- Satanism. The heated argumeni of these thoughts directlyresulted in severa1 adjusiment of Russian diplomatic policy after the RussianFederation was set up. TOday Euro- Satanism has been the current tIend ofideologies, which leads to "totaI diplomacy ". In the meamime the geopoliticaIfactors are worth contemp1ating permanent1y and primari1y is spite of the era ofthe USSR when ideo1ogy is overriding.TO some extent Total Dip1omacy has objectly obtain an active effect which isto prompt the economic deve1opment of the nation, to improve the nation'sconfidence and cohesion, to elevate the status of Russia as a geopolitical powef,to control the overflow of national separatism and extreme religions, to safeguardregiona1 and global stabi1ity and peace. But the diplomatic po1icy has its seriousdisadVantages because of a lot of restricted factors including the extfemeweakness of overall strength of Russia, the trend of disintegration of the CIS, thedisequal treat from west, which make it difficult to realize the idea purpose. WhatAnssia has done in response to the eastward expansion of NATO is an examp1e todemonstrate the dipIomatic policy's defects. We can't take good actions to keep touch with another collflry if we don'sknow What its strategy is. So researching this project is a must.
