Balance-of-power theory is one of the most important theories in the international politics. The term balance of power is highly ambiguous but has been used in two basic ways. From different points of view, the balance-of-power can be classified. There are two types of balance-of-power, i.e. antagonistic balance-of-power and competitive balance-of-power. An example of the former exists in South Asia, and an example of the latter exists in Southeast Asia. The reasons why two regions developed two types of balance-of-power are due to six factors, such as geography, history, and so on.The balance of power in south Asia may lose its equilibrium in the long run, and Southeast Asia will maintain its equilibrium.China should play different roles as Standby and Participator in these two types of balance of power, basing on the Five Principle of Peaceful Coexistence and his own strategic interests.
