After the enforcement of the Immigration Act of 1965, Chinese immigrants from the main land of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other places of the world have increased rapidly. The new immigrants have changed the demographic characteristics of the old Chinese community and their education, occupation, culture and custom are more complex. As immigrants, the first problem of Chinese Americans facing was employment, because employment situation can reflect mostly the political and economic status and life state. Meanwhile, employment is also the key to Americanization. Based on the works of American scholars and the findings of the U.S. government and directed by the historical materialism, this thesis tries to explore and analyze the employment problems of Chinese Americans during 1965-1990. The thesis is composed of preface, text, conclusion and appendix. There includes four parts in the text:Part one analyzes the characteristics and the changing reasons of contemporary Chinese Americans in region source, sex, age, education and technology background and geographical dispersion so on.Part two summarizes the employment model of Chinese Americans, describes the major occupational groups, the employment trend of Chinese women, the regional difference of employment and the differences between the native bom and the foreign bom Chinese.Part three explores the decisive factors affecting the employment of Chinese Americans including mainly two factors. The first is the changing industrial structure of American economic development, the forming of employment and training system and the enforcement of the Affirmative Action Program; The second is the internal reasons including the function of the Confucian traditional culture, the rising of ethnic economy and the spirit of helping each other among Chinese Americans.Part four introduces the problems in Chinese employment such as underemployment, race discrimination and the lower personal income thanthe Whites, and analyzes the causes of these problems.The conclusion part explores the effect of the employment of Chinese Americans to their Americanization such as suburbanization, the heightening of political consciousness and the increasing rate of intermarrying with other ethnics.
