Fish culture, one of the most important constituent parts of agriculture, is developing very fast in recent years. In 2000, Chinese total aquatic production reaches 42.79 mil tones, which accounts to 12% of total agricultural value, 20% of agricultural product import/export value. With theevelopment of fish culture, more and more products are coming into the market. However, due to serious environmental pollution and bad quality control situation in cultivation, aquatic products quality / safety issue is becoming one of the most important factor affecting Chinese fishery sustainable development trend. After entering WTO, the trade issues that happened in this year due to quality problem also alarms the bell for us. In this article , the situation of current aquatic products quality / safety management and fishery trade issues after China's entering WTO were analysed . Based on study of trade principles, Chinese aquatic products revealed comparable advantage was pointed out. Suggestions for how to improve quality/safety management in fish products were given from the points of governmental reputation and manufacturer self control. Several conclusions were drown as under:1.As shown by statistics result, China, whose total trade value is the second largest country in the world, is becoming a big aquatic product producer, just inferior to Norway.2. Chinese aquatic products show strong competitive advantage in the world. Detail analysis presents difference between varieties such as aquatic plants, crustaceans / molluscs canned, fish, dried, salted or smoked / canned / fresh, chilled and frozen. For meals, oils and sponges, coral shows disadvantage in international trade.3. Methods/ways were discussed to improve current quality status , both in macroscopical control such as aquatic products quality/safety control system , monitoring system and specification system setting up and in manufacturers self management .
